Taking a cue from the Odisha Olympic Association (OOA), the Odisha Cricket Association (OCA) today announced a cash prize of Rs 50,000 for defender Birendra Lakra, who was part of the Indian men’s hockey team that won the gold medal in the Asian Games after 16 long years and also secured an automatic berth for the 2016 Rio Olympics.
The OCA also announced Rs 10,000 each for the four Odisha girls – Namita Toppo, Deep Grace Ekka, Sunita Lakra
and Nilima Minz – who were part of the Indian women’s hockey team that secured a bronze for the country at the Asiad in Incheon.
In a statement, OCA honorary secretary Asirbad Behera congratulated Lakra and the four girls from the state for their contribution to the rare achievement in the Asian Games.
The Indian men’s hockey team defeated arch-rivals and defending champions Pakistan 4-2 in a nerve-wracking shoot-out at the Asian Games on Thursday.
