Baripada, Jan 21:
A local court in Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district today sentenced two persons to 20 years imprisonment for gang rape of an 18-year-old girl in 2013.
District and Sessions Judge Ajay Kumar Mohanty sentenced the two convicts, the driver and conductor of a bus, under Section 376 (D) of the IPC while acquitting two others for want of evidence. The two acquitted persons included a third staff of the bus.
The court also imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 on each of the two convicts failing which the prison period would be extended by a year.
“The money to be realised from the convicts will be handed over to the victim,” the judge said in the order.
It may be recalled that a minor Dalit girl was raped inside a moving bus and then dumped near Singda Chhak near Sukruli bus stand in Mayurbhanj district on September 5, 2013.
The incident took place when the victim, a native of Badabarbeda village under Dhinkikut outpost of Keonjhar district, was coming to her relatives’ place at Sukruli in the bus. After the other passengers got down at earlier stoppages, the girl was left alone in the bus. She was then raped by the staff of the bus and dumped a few yards before the bus stand.
Following a complaint lodged by the parents of the victim, the police had arrested four persons.
