Odisha court sentences retired DFO to 32-month RI

The Special Vigilance Court in the Odisha capital today sentenced a retired Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) to two years and eight months rigorous imprisonment (RI) after convicting him on charges of accumulating properties disproportionate to his known sources of income.

The convicted former government officer is retired Nuapada DFO Abhaya Charan Khuntia.

According to Public Prosecutor of Vigilance Sunil Pati, Special Vigilance Court judge Bibhu Prasad Routray convicted Khuntia for possessing illegal assets of Rs 7, 69, 860. Besides the 32-month rigorous imprisonment (RI), the court also imposed a fine of Rs 77, 000 on Khuntia, he added.

When Khuntia was working as DFO in Nuapada district, Pati said, the Vigilance sleuths had conducted raids on Khuntia’s official residence at Khariar and his house at Nayapalli in the city on July 17, 1993 for possessing disproportionate property worth Rs 8, 21, 270. The Vigilance had arrested the ex-DFO under the Prevention of Corruption Act the same day, he added.
