Odisha court sentences 10 persons to life for Dharol murder

A local court in Odisha today sentenced 10 persons to life imprisonment for beating a man to death five years ago.


Pronouncing the quantum of punishment, Padmapur Additional District and Sessions court judge Sarat Dehuri sentenced 10 persons to life imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 1000 failing which they would serve an additional two months jail term. While one of the accused has died and another is a minor, the court acquitted three others accused in the case.

It may be mentioned here that Dharol village under Paikamal police station limits in Bargarh district.

On the fateful day of January 8, 2011, Trinath Rana, Bajrang Rana and Gobardhan Rana were allegedly attacked by Shankar Rana, Tankadhar Rana, Arjun Rana, Thabir Rana, Chaina Rana, Sukanta Rana, Ramesh Rana, Ganda Rana, Raj Kumar Rana, Rajaram Rana, Hrushi Rana, Pandav Rana, Peetabas Rana and a minor with lathi and sharp weapons, while the trio was working in their field.

While Bajrang managed to escape from the spot, Trinath and Gobardhan were beaten blue and black. Trinath sustained grievour injuries and Gobardhan succumbed to his injuries.

Following the incident, Gobardhan’s daughter Annapurna and Trinath filed an FIR with the local police against 15 persons of the village. The investigating officer (IO) Sukumar Tripathy dropped the name of Rajaram and begun investigation against the 14 other accused. However, Padmapur SDJM court directed to include Rajaram in the case and file the charge sheet.
