The CJM court imposed a fine of Rs One lakh each on the two vice presidents – Satish Tyagi and Rahul Sengupta – in seven cases of violation of safety and security standards in the plant in 2009 and 2010 in which eight persons were killed.

The court has further ordered that in the event of non-realization of the penalties, the two have to undergo imprisonment for one year.

The court pronounced its verdict while adjudicating on seven cases of violation of safety and security standards in the plant in 2009 and 2010 instituted against the company by the Directorate of Factories and Boilers.

On April 16 this year, the same court had imposed a fine of Rs 5 lakh each on Tyagi and Sengupta, on similar charges of violation of safety standards at the plant while asking them to undergo imprisonment of one year in case they failed to pay the penalty amount.

Cases of violation of safety standards by Bhushan Steel were filed by the Directorate of Factories and Boilers of the Odisha government between 2008 and 2011 .
