Odisha police today arrested a CPI (M) leader on charges of extortion, tender fixing and having links with the gangster siblings Sushant and Sushil Dhalsamanta.
Chauliaganj police arrested Siba Gochhi who is said to be a close associate of Bharatbhusan Swain, a contractor who was also arrested earlier on January 31 this year.
With today’s arrest here, the number of arrested persons having links with the Dhalsamanta brothers has risen to 18.
Notably, Gochhi is also the secretary of Cuttack Truck Owners’ Association.
Prior to his arrest, Twin City Commissioner of Police YB Khurania addressed a press conference in the capital city.
“As many as 10 cases have been filed against those having direct or indirect links with the notorious criminal duo. Of these, two cases of linked to homicide. So far, 17 persons have been arrested for having links with the Dhalsamanta brothers,” YB Khurania said.
He further added that Rs 3.62 crore cash has been seized and Rs 2.65 crore has been traced to different accounts of the brothers. Besides, 23 guns including a carbine and seven vehicles have been seized.
The top cop stressed that anybody having links with the Dhalsamanta duo won’t be spared.
With the arrest of Gochhi, the politician-criminal nexus has come to the fore.
It may be recalled that the duo was arrested from a rented house in Pokhariput area in Bhubaneswar on January 29 on charges of tender fixing and extortion. Commissionerate police had seized Rs 2, 65, 14, 740 in cash, mobile phones, a laptop and a diary from the house during the raid.
Besides, an arms dump comprising of a 9mm carbine, a DBBL (Double Barrel Breech Loading) gun and a magazine, four 9mm mousers, 23 DBBL and 127 9mm ammunition was recovered during a raid at the residence of the accused at Sector 6 of CDA.
