Bhubaneswar, Feb 29:
Odisha Crime Branch today arrested a police officer from Khurda in connection with a case where two siblings immolated themselves to evade arrest in Balasore in 2012.
The then IIC of Balasore Town police station Tariq Ahmad was arrested by the sleuths today for his alleged complicity in the case. He was produced before the Sub Divisional Judicial Magistrate (SDJM) court in Balasore later in the day.
During investigation, the investigating agency found that Tariq was responsible for creating a situation leading to the suicide of the brothers.
It may be recalled that a team led by Tariq Ahmad and other staff of Balasore Town police station had raided a house at Pathana Mahala in Balasore in November 2012. When the police reportedly tried to enter the house and asked the brothers– Sheikh Sabir and Sheikh Sadique– to come out, the duo threatened self immolation.
The brothers poured kerosene and set them on fire when police proceeded to arrest them in connection with a case of assaulting a person and his staff besides ransacking his shops owing to business rivalry. The brothers dealt with interior decoration of house and gift items.
Police rescued the brothers and rushed them to district headquarters hospital (DHH) with over 90% burn injuries. While one of them succumbed to the injuries at the DHH, the other brother was referred to SCB Medical College and Hospital (SCBMCH) where he too succumbed to his injuries.
Following the incident, the family members of the deceased had approached the then DGP Prakash Mishra demanding action against the erring officials. Two officials, including Tariq, were transferred from Balasore Town police station and Crime Branch was entrusted with the task of inquiring into the matter.
