Nuapada, Oct 30:
Odisha congress today started its second phase Padyatra named ‘Jagaran Yatra’ that began from Ghuchaguda village in Nuapada district and ended in Jugenpadar village of the same district.
Led by Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) President Prasad Harichandan, Leader of Opposition in Odisha Assembly Narasingha Mishra, AICC General Secretary BK Hariprasad, Secretary Subhankar Sarkar and other senior congress leaders, the rally was attended by hundreds of enthusiastic congress workers.
Later, a public meeting was held at Jugenpadar village that was also attended by thousands of supporters.
Issues such as irregularities in ration card distribution, drought situation, farmer suicide, acute shortage of drinking water, issues with land record distribution and ownership were taken up prominently in today’s meeting where the speakers were vocal in their attack against the government.
The main focus of the Padayatra has been to highlight the failures of state and central governments. Farmer suicide, however, was the top agenda today, as Harichandan along with Hariprasad and other leaders met the family members of Bhubaneswar Behera, a farmer who recently committed suicide in Barpadar Village.
“It is the inaction of Naveen Patnaik government that has led to suicide of farmers. Congress has been fighting for the cause of the common people and farmers and will continue to do it,” reiterated party Chief Harichandan.
“Odisha Government is deliberately trying to ascribe deaths to reasons other than crop loss to hide its failure. If the government is sincere, it should form all-party delegations to visit families of each of deceased farmers & find out the truth,” said Leader of Opposition Mishra.
It may be noted that the Padyatra will be organized in Nabarangpur district tomorrow. Earlier the party had planned to conduct the Jagran Yatra in 10 phases across the state. It would continue till April next year.
