Odisha Cong workers stage demo, demand arrest of rape accused

A day after a rape victim allegedly committed suicide by setting herself on fire at Bhagabanpur under Town police station limits in Odisha’s Dhenkanal district, members of Mahila Congress and kin of the deceased today staged a road blockade at Bajichowk square demanding immediate arrest of the accused and compensation to the victim’s family members.

The activists burnt tyres and staged demonstration pressing for their demands following which vehicular movement was hit. The commuters faced difficulties due to the road blockade.

Meanwhile, SDPO and Town police officials rushed to the spot to pacify the agitators.

Yesterday, the class IX student doused herself with kerosene before setting herself on fire. The minor was raped by her neighbour Ranjan Sahu while she had gone out of her house to attend nature’s call in the wee hours. Following this, an FIR was lodged with Town police station

When the accused was grilled, he reportedly confessed to have committed the crime and apologised to the family members of the girl. The girl’s family and the accused’s family then signed a compromise note and submitted it at the Town police station.

The victim is learnt to have told her sisters that she was hurt and humiliated as a compromise deal was struck with her tormentor. Fearing public shame and ignominy, the victim allegedly committed suicide yesterday.
