Odisha Cong chief all praise for ‘Canal Man’

Keonjhar: Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee (OPCC) President Niranjan Patnaik today met ‘Canal Man’ Daitari Naik at his home in Tala Baitarini village in Keonjhar district and felicitated him for digging a three-km-long canal to irrigate his farmland.

The OPCC chief felicitated Daitari, who has earned the sobriquet of ‘Canal Man’ for single handedly working day and night for years removing rocks and bushes to get water flow down to his village with a garland and a shawl.

“Learning from newspaper and television reports about his efforts to save Kharif crops in around 300-400 acres without single paisa assistance from the government, this being a matter concerning my district I have came here with a lot of excitement to meet him. My objective behind this visit is if we can get the canal cemented either by the government or through some agency so that more area is irrigated,” said Patnaik speaking to reporters.

Patnaik took to micro-blogging site twitter where he lauded the determination of Daitari.

The veteran Congress leader, who hails from the mineral-rich Keonjhar district lambasted the State government for underdevelopment of the region.
