New Delhi: The CBI today registered as many as five cases against a senior official and some employees of the Hindustan Aeronautics Limited at Sunabeda in Odisha’s Koraput district on charges of fraudulently misappropriating funds to the tune of around Rs 13 crores between 2013 and 2018.
The cases have been registered against Bhaben Maitra, Senior Manager, Engine Division, HAL and several other staff on the basis of a complaint by Uday Kumar Rout, Manager (Vigilance) of the HAL Engine Department.
Rout in his complaint against the officials from HAL’s finance section alleged that the scam occurred between January 2013 and August 2018.
He said preliminary scrutiny of payment vouchers from that period revealed that payments of more than Rs 13 crore was made without any supporting documents.
The CBI has booked the accused for cheating, criminal conspiracy, forgery, criminal misconduct and misappropriation by public servants.
The investigating agency had in October, last year raided 12 places in Sunabeda including offices of HAL employees and recovered incriminating document, besides interrogating some employees.
According to reports, HAL authorities had given financial power to the senior manager for issuing cheques to different agencies up to Rs one lakh in a month, but he allegedly misused his official position by disbursing funds fraudulently.
Maitra had allegedly issued cheques worth crores of rupees to several agencies beyond his capacity. Subsequently, the audit team had summoned the senior manager for deposing before it in connection with the matter. But he did not respond and absconded.
