Bhubaneswar, Nov 1:
The special CBI court today sent senior BJD leader Pravat Tripathy, arrested by the CBI in connection with the Odisha chit fund scam yesterday, on a 13-day CBI remand.
Manmohan Patnaik, counsel for Tripathy, opposed the remand petition moved by CBI counsel Kali Charan Mishra on health grounds.
He argued that the Banki MLA, who has had a major surgery a few weeks back, was in no physical condition to undergo the rigours of interrogation in CBI custody.
Tripathy had been advised to undergo a check-up at a hospital in Chennai, he pointed out.
CBI counsel Mishra, however, made a strong pitch for Tripathy’s remand producing the medical certificate given by Dr. Bansidhar Nayak of the Capital Hospital this morning, which found that the health condition of the BJD leader was perfectly normal.
After hearing arguments from the two sides, the judge sent Tripathy on a 13-day remand. He would be produced in the court again on November 13, the judge ordered.
Tripathy’s counsel had also moved a bail petition on his client’s behalf. But it was not heard today.
