The denizens in Odisha capital today witnessed the curtain raiser of International Women’s Day (IWD) as the stretch along the Janpath was agog with pre Women’s Day celebration on the occasion of eighth Raahgiri day.
State’s leading vernacular newspaper daily “Sambad” today organized a pre Women’s Day celebration on the occasion here this morning.
The programme was inaugurated by Biju Janata Dal (BJD) MLA and spokesperson Sashi Bhusan Behera. An all-women quiz contest was organized and freebies were on offer for the winners.
Smart City ambassador and popular Ollywood actor Archita Sahu also graced the occasion as special guest.
“The initiative by Sambad is to celebrate the Women’s Day. We celebrate it every day. This year we are celebrating on the Raahgiri day,” Joint Managing Director of Eastern Media Limited (EML) Monica Nayyar Patnaik said.
The event was supported by Kanak News and Radio Choklate.
Majority of the participants at the Raahgiri day today, however, centered their activities around IWD to be celebrated on March 8.
While the city-based organisation promoting library movement, literature, art, heritage and environment, Bakul, organised a unique story-telling session titled ‘’Mighty Girls’’ with characters from history and contemporary world on heroic activities of women and their contribution towards society. National Alliance of Women, Odisha (NAWO) staged a show on gender equality as this year’s theme for IWD has been ‘’Planet 50-50 by 2030: Step it up for gender equality’’.
The NAWO play highlighted the grim reality of the dwindling numbers of brides in our society due to female foeticide and infanticide. Audience in large numbers witnessed the event near Stage II in front of Ram Mandir. Organisations like Ama Odisha, Madhyam and Mirambika also organised events on women.
