The ruling BJD’s candidate for the forthcoming by-elections to the Kandhamal Lok Sabha seat in Odisha Pratyusha Rajeswari Singh, widow of the late Hemendra Chandra Singh, today filed her nomination papers at the office of the district collector and returning officer.
Ms Singh accompanied by several ministers, senior BJD leaders and family members went in a procession to file her papers for the October 15 bypoll.
Hundreds of party workers and supporters took part in the procession holding party flags, banners and pictures of Ms Singh.
BJD president Naveen Patnaik had announced Ms Singh’s name as the party’s nominee for the seat that fell vacant after her husband’s sudden and untimely demise.
While the Congress has fielded former legislator Abhimanyu Behera as its candidate for the by-poll in Kandhamal, BJP has decided to field former BJD MP Rudra Madhab Ray as its candidate.
Both Behera and Ray are scheduled to file their nomination papers on Friday, sources said.
