The death toll in Odisha’s Dhenkanal boat capsize incident rose to six after all missing bodies were recovered.
While four bodies were recovered by last evening, bodies of Kalia Mohanty and Babina Rout from Surapratappur village were recovered today by the ODRAF teams and fire brigade. Both were found near Kirtanpur ghat.
Kamakhyanagar Police have lodged a complaint against the boatman – identified as Bauribandhu Behera and his assistance.
“We have lodged a complaint against Bauribandhu Behera and one of his assistants under section 280 and 504A of IPC. He is on the run. We are conducting raids to nab him,” said Kamakhyanagar SDPO Sk Abdul Rahim.
On the other hand, State Government yesterday announced an ex-gratia of Rs 4 lakh for the next of kin of the deceased from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund. The cheques have already been provided to four families identified by late last evening.
“As directed by the government and in direct supervision of the collector, we have provided Rs 4 Lakh compensation to the four families identified last evening,” said a senior official of Dhenkanal administration Judhisthira Nayak.
The Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) has also ordered the district collector to probe into the incident and submit its report.
Notably, the incident occurred late Monday evening after 30-35 villagers of Surapratappur village boarded a country boat and were travelling to Lord Daudeswar’s shrine in Gondia block of the same district to witness Jagar mela (Shivaratri celebrations). The boat capsized in river Brahmani at Chandipal ghat under Bhuban block in Odisha’s Dhenkanal district.
