Odisha Sun Times Bureau
Bhubaneswar, Nov 27:

The impasse in the Odisha Assembly continued for the seventh consecutive day as members of the ruling BJD rushed into the well of the House shouting slogans like ‘Naveen Patnaik Zindabad’ at the start of the Question Hour forcing the Speaker to adjourn the House till 3 PM.

While Congess members protested holding banners in their hands with black bands toed on their mouths, the BJP members shouted from their seats with placards in their hands.

The Congress had given notice for an adjournment motion today on the mining scam in the state.

“The ruling party is not interested to run the House. See the way they today rushed into the well of the House shouting ‘Naveen Patnaik zindabad.’ They are scared of debating issues in the House. This is how they want to run the House till December 1 or 2 and then prorogue this session,” Tara Prasad Bahinipati, Congress chief whip, told reporters outside the Assembly premises.

Bahinipati questioned why the speaker had to adjourn the House till 3PM. “Since the ruling party did not want to take up the adjournment motion on mining scam for discussion today, the speaker adjourned the House till 3 PM. He could have adjourned the House till 11.30 AM and taken the motion for discussion as soon as the House reassembled,” he said.

The Congres chief whip said his party had given notices for discussions on several  important issues concerning the state, including the chit fund scam, the Ghangapatna land scam and the mining scam.

He accused the BJD government of involvement in the mining scam, which led to closing down of mines and large scale unemployment and fall in the state’s revenue earnings.

The ruling party, however, rejected all the charges levelled by Bahinipati.

“Tara Prasad Bahinipati is known for his absurd and wild allegations. Everyone across the state knows about it. The government is not at all scared of debating issues as claimed by Bahinipati. It’s fully prepared to discuss any issue  in the House. It is actually the Congress that is scared to take up the land scam issue as it was during their regime that most of the lands were allotted. The Congress and the BJP don’t want to run the House as the involvement of many of their leaders will come to the fore if the issue is debated,” said Anant Das, government chief whip speaking to the media outside the House.

“Let the Congress members remove the bands over their mouths and behave like legislators. The government is prepared to debate any issue,” Das said.

On the issue of the speaker adjourning the House till 3 PM today Das said it is the Speaker who can answer the question. “The speaker might have sensed the sense of the House and taken the decision accordingly,” he said.
