Bhubaneswar: The monsoon session of the Odisha Assembly started on a stormy note today as ruling BJD members created uproar in the House resulting in an adjournment till 3 PM.
As soon as the House assembled for the day, the BJD members shouted slogans standing near their seats demanding hike in minimum support price (MSP) of paddy.
Unable to run the House amid pandemonium, Speaker Pradip Kumar Amat adjourned it till 3 PM.
“The Central government is not willing to pay heed to the issues of farmers. We today opposed the low MSP of paddy following which the House was adjourned,” said BJD leader Amar Prasad Satpathy speaking to reporters outside the House.
“Congress had today moved an adjournment motion over farmers’ issues. A debate in this regard would have revealed how much the Central and Odisha governments are responsible for the problems of farmers. In a bid to escape from it, they (BJD) created ruckus which led to adjournment,” said Leader of Opposition Narasingha Mishra outside the House.
The BJD members later marched towards Raj Bhawan, Odisha Governor Dr SC Jamir’s residence here, and submitted a memorandum to him addressed to the President of India over Mahanadi issue, paddy MSP and special category state status to Odisha.
Noisy scenes prevailed in the House after it reassembled as Narasingha Mishra demanded a censure motion against Prime Minister Narendra Modi following which Congress members created uproar.
After a brief adjournment of 30 minutes, Speaker Amat eventually adjourned the Assembly till Monday.
