Officials in Odisha’s Kandhamal district on Tuesday raided Jihabajiri Janakalyan Ashram at Bastingia under Chakapada police station limits and rescued 19 children.
Acting on reports from confidential sources about the ill-treatment and torture of these children by the Ashram authorities, a team of officials from the district headquarters raided the Ashram and rescued 19 children including three girls in the age group of 5-10 years.
Of the 19 rescued children, eight are from Mayurbhanj district, one of Baliguda area and 10 from Raikia area of Kandhamal district.
The children told the officialsthat the Ashram authorities were not providing them with proper food and forcing them to collect firewood from the forest and graze goats.
The sevashram had been illegally running since 1998.
The district administration would conduct further inquiry and take appropriate action against the sevashram owner Sunil Kumar Digal, the officials said.
