Bhubaneswar, Feb 26:
Students seeking admissions to diploma engineering courses in Odisha will no longer be required to appear entrance examination from the current academic year; admissions to the courses will be done on the basis of marks secured at the High School Certificate (HSC) examination.
A notification abolishing entrance examination for admissions to diploma engineering courses in the state was issued by the Skill Development and Technical Education department here today.
The decision to do away with entrance examination for admissions to diploma engineering courses was taken earlier at meeting of the state Cabinet.
The notification clearly states that from now onwards admissions will be made on the basis of marks secured at the HSC examinations.
The Skill Development and Technical Education department’s notification says that as per the guidelines of the All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE) a student securing 35 percent marks in his/her HSC examination is eligible to take admission to diploma engineering courses.
Sources in the department said the decision was taken to motivate more number of students to undertake these courses for skill enhancement. The department was also under pressure as seats in thousands were lying vacant in various polytechnics and engineering schools in the state.
However, educationists are of a different opinion that the move would downgrade the quality of education.
