Phulbani, Dec 19:
Five years and two months after he was arrested for his alleged complicity in the much-hyped Kandhamal Nun Rape case, Gajendra Digal (62) walked out of the Phulbani jail on Thursday evening after the Supreme Court granted him bail.
The nearly blind elderly person was named as an accused along with 23 others in the case of alleged rape of a nun in Kanjomendi near Baliguda in August 2008. He was arrested on October 18 the same year and was sent to jail after the local court rejected his bail plea.
It was long legal battle that finally saw him out of jail, finally.
After his release, Digal told OST he was in no way involved with the alleged act.
” I have faith in God and the judiciary and I am sure my innocence will be established,” Digal said.
Digal said the only good thing about his incarceration is that the authorities of the Choudwar jail had helped him undergo an eye operation and that has helped him to see the world.
It may be noted here that 23 of the 24 persons accused in the nun rape case are out on bail. The main accused in the case Mitu Patnaik, however, is still in jail.
The trial in this highly publicised case is still incomplete.
