Champua, Jun 7:
After failing to get justice against the harrassment by a married man who had been blackmailing her after taking her nude photos, a young woman of Patala village under Champua police station limits in Odisha’s Keonjhar district committed suicide on Saturday morning.
The incident came light after Kanhu Patra, father of the deceased Sanju Patra (20), informed the media about the incident.
He said Manoranjan Patra of Khareitangiri village, who had married Sanju’s niece and has three children, had developed relationship with his daughter during his visit to his house since a year ago. Later, Manoranjan had invited his daughter to his house and later took her with his family for an outing to Puri.
“In the meanwhile, taking opportunity of her innocence, the youth had managed to take some of her nude photos. He had also proposed to marry my daughter to which she refused. Enraged at the refusal, the youth disrupted her marriage scheduled on May 10 last year after showing her nude photographs to the bridegroom family,” Kanhu said.
He also said the youth later threatened my family members of dire consequences if they proceed with another marriage proposal for Sanju.
“Following the threat, we had lodged a complaint with the Champua police 15 days ago. But the police did not take any action. I had to lodge another complaint with the police two days ago after receiving fresh threat from Manoranjan. Instead of taking any action against the accused, IIC Sangram Tudu asked me for a compromise. My daughter, after coming to know about the apathy of the police, committed suicide by hanging herself inside the house”, Kanhu said in a chocked voice.
On the other hand, the IIC said the family of the deceased had complained about the nude photos of the deceaed taken by the accused. But the police did not find any photo from him.
