Bhubaneswar, July 25:
The Odisha government has directed the Director of Elementary Education to conduct an inquiry and submit an action taken report (ATR) within a week to the department of School and Mass Education on the lack of access to primary education for over 300 children in vulnerable coastal villages like Satbhaya, Magarkanda and Kanhupur villages in Kendrapada district.
The NHRC’s notice to the Odisha government was issued on the basis of a complaint filed by rights activist Dillip Kumar Das of Antodaya, a civil rights NGO, who had cited a report published in odishasuntimes.com. on May 2 under the headline; “A school devoured by sea, govt apathy.”
Das had prayed for kind intervention of the Commission in the matter to do justice to the deprived children by enclosing the news item published.
Considering the seriousness of the issue, the NHRC has sought a report from the principal secretary School and Mass Education of the state government on the matter within four weeks.
