A notorious criminal was today shot dead in a shootout with the police on the outskirts of Odisha’s Sambalpur city.
The historysheeter, identified as Raju Saha, was killed in an exchange of fire near Dengasaragi under Ainthapalli police station limits here, the Sambalpur SP Akhileswar Singh said.
A police subinspector has been injured in the shootout, reports said.
Police sources said, after getting information that some criminals were hiding in Dengsaragi village under Ainthapalli police limits, Sambalpur police raided the village.
The deceased criminal Raju, who first opened fire at the police during the raid was grievously hurt in the return fire by the police and succumbed to his injuries on the way to VSS Medical College and Hospital at Burla, the sources added.
Assistant Sub Inspector of Ainthapalli police station Dhabaleswar Sahoo was hit by a bullet in his leg during the shootout.
Raju was a known criminal with several criminal cases including that of gun-running pending against him. A few days ago he was caught by the police for possession of illegal firearms, sources in the police revealed.
