Noida-based realtor arrested for land fraud in Odisha

Amid high drama, the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of the Odisha Crime Branch arrested the owner of a real estate company from his Noida residence yesterday for selling a disputed land on the outskirts of Bhubaneswar to a Delhi-based businessman.

In a joint operation, the three-member EOW team and Noida police raided the Sector 44 residence of the accused Rahul Gaur early yesterday morning. Gaur, the chairman and managing director of Brys Group, is accused of defrauding a Delhi-based real estate developer. However, the police found the house locked.

On realising that the house was locked from inside apparently to hoodwink the police, the sleuths warned the Gaurs to break open the door. After nearly eight hours of struggle to get hold of the elusive realtor, Rahul gave up and appeared before the police following which he was arrested.

Gaur has been arrested under section 420, 467 and 468 of the Indian Penal Code.

Gaur will be produced before a Noida court today and then taken to Bhubaneswar on a transit remand, sources said.

On October 30, the EOW of Odisha Police had registered a cheating case against Gaur based on a complaint by Saranpal Singh Sethy, a Delhi-based real estate developer. Sethy had filed a complaint at Balianta police station that Gaur had cheated him of Rs 18 crore by selling him a 3.5 acre disputed land near Pahala on the outskirts of Bhubaneswar. Acting on the complaint, the case was handed over to the EOW, sources added.

An investigating team under the supervision of Crime Branch ADG BK Sharma was formed to nab the accused. The accused had allegedly sold the mortgaged land to Sethy.

The Crime Branch would take the accused on remand and interrogate him to ascertain the involvement of others in the case, sources close to the development informed.
