Bhubaneswar: Odisha Agriculture and Farmers’ Empowerment, Fisheries and Animal Resources Development Minister Pradeep Maharathy today said that there is no use of formalin, a cancer-causing chemical, in fish procured from Andhra Pradesh.

In a written reply to a question in the Assembly, Maharathy told the State Laboratory report confirms that there is no presence of formalin in fish imported from Andhra Pradesh.

The reports came after various fish samples collected from different parts of the State were tested in the laboratory, which found no traces of the harmful chemical, the Minister added.

Earlier, the Fisheries and Animal Resources Development Department had collected fish samples following reports of fish traders of Andhra Pradesh use formalin instead of ice to keep the fishes fresh.

First, Assam government had banned import of fishes from outside the state after finding traces of the chemical in fish here.

Formalin, a toxic and carcinogenic chemical commonly used to preserve dead bodies in mortuaries, is used to prevent fish from deteriorating during transportation.
