Nine held for communal clash in Odisha’s Rajgangpur

Nine persons were arrested and forwarded to a local court in Rajgangpur in Odisha’s Sundargarh district today in connection with a clash between two communities yesterday.

The arrested have been identified as Samash Tabrej (40), Md Azim (48), Md Manzoor (44), Md Irfan (27), Ahmed Muktar (24), Md Sarfraj (18), Md Samshed (25), Md Tanvir Alam (29) and Raj Kumar Prasad (25).

Sources said one Bishnu Sahu of Bagichapara under Rajgangpur police station was beaten up by a youth of a minority community at about 3 PM on Friday over some issue. Matters took a violent turn when Bishnu returned with a group of people at about 5 PM and thrashed the youth who had assaulted him.

Following the incident, several people of minority community lodged an FIR with the Rajgangpur police station. But as the police delayed in taking action, the irate minority went violent and attacked the group and damaged their vehicles.

Later, several people of the Hindu community gheraoed Rajgangpur police station in the evening demanding action against the minority community people.

Sensing trouble, the district administration deployed eight platoons of armed police force in the town.

After a night long raid, police arrested nine persons today.

To restore law and order in the area, police conducted a flag march in the town this morning.

“The situation in the town has now been brought under control,” said Rajgangpur IIC, SP Das.
