Niali: The efforts of the Forest department to curb killing of sheep by an unidentified mysterious animal in Niali area of Odisha’s Cuttack district seems to be unfruitful as the creature allegedly killed a sheep and injured nine others in the region last night.
According to reports, a sheep at Gobindhapada village here was killed in a similar way as other sheep were recently killed by the killer animal/animals, suspected to be a wolf or a pack of wolves locally called rama siyala.
This apart, nine sheep of the village and Naakata Sahi here were reportedly injured by the mystery animal.
Demanding compensation, irate locals today blocked Niali-Phulnakhara road by burning tyres.

On the other hand, the Odisha Human Rights Commission (OHRC) yesterday taking cognisance of mass killings of sheep and expressing concern about the panicking people of the locality issued notices to the state government.
Taking up a petition filed by High Court lawyer Nishikant Mishra, Acting Chairman of the Commission Justice (Retd) BK Mishra, issued the notices to as many as seven Government officials, including the Cuttack district Collector.
The officials were asked to file separate reports within two weeks stating what actions have been taken by them in the matter to remove the fear from the minds of the locals and to save their domestic animals.
Notably, about 150 sheep have been killed by the unidentified creature in Niali area in the last 45 days leading to panic among the locals who are spending sleepless nights with youths guarding the area armed with sticks and torches to nab the killer.
