New Delhi, July 26:
Taking up the issue of alleged uninhabitable living condition of Mankidia and Hill Khadia tribals in Kendumundi village of Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district, the NHRC on Thursday sought a report from the state government on the matter.
Taking suo motu cognisance of media reports that the tribals are forced to live in one-room houses, which neither have windows nor electricity supply, in government colony in Kendumundi village, National Human Rights Commission asked Odisha Chief Secretary to file a report within four weeks, an NHRC statement said here.
According to media reports, 38 tribal families inhabiting these houses have complained of lack of ventilation due to which they feel suffocated. A number of new homes have been added to the colony, which was constructed to settle the peripatetic Mankidias at one place, but the absence of windows remains a common feature.
The human rights watchdog observed the reports, if true, is a serious issue of violation of right to live with dignity. (PTI)
