Bhubaneswar, Nov 1:
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has served notice to the chief secretary and the Kandhamal SP has asking them for a report within four weeks on the death of two girl students in a case of wall collapse in a Sevashram school in Kandhamal district on September 29 this year.
The directive of the Commission has come in response to a petition lodged by Human Rights Watch (HRW) secretary Sangita Swain.
While Rasmita Kanhar and Arnapurna Pradhan died on the spot, several other students were injured when a wall of Bastingia Sevashram near Chakapada collapsed.
The building was constructed by the Integrated Tribal Development Agency (ITDA) and the School and Mass Education department in 2008, the complainant said.
The petitioner has urged the Commission to direct the state government to give compensation of Rs 10 lakh each to the families of the deceased and Rs 5 lakh to the injured students while initiating stringent action against the concerned authorities responsible for the tragedy.
