Bhubaneswar, Nov 25:
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has issued notice to the state government to furnish within four weeks a report on Bhushan fire mishap that killed at least two and injured 29 persons .
“Issue notice to the concerned authority calling for a report in the matter within four weeks,” said Assistant Registrar (Law) of NHRC in two separate letters to district magistrate and superintendent of police, Dhenkanal.
The Commission’s notice over the incident follows a complaint from Manoj Jena, chairperson of an NGO, Human Rights Front.
It is to be noted that the explosion at blast furnace II of Bhushan steel plant at Meramundali in Dhenkanal district which killed two and injured 29 persons caused public outrage as more than 100 people have died in accidents inside the plant since its inception. Besides, the company had commissioned the blast furnace without having the statutory consent to operate from the Odisha State Pollution Control Board (OSPCB). While the OSPCB has filed cases against the company at the SDJM court in Dhenkanal, the director of Factories and Boilers has so far filed 70 criminal cases.
