NGO workers foil gangrape bid in city, nab a suspect

Alert NGO workers rescued a 35-year old woman in a semi-conscious state from the clutches of miscreants who had drugged her allegedly with the intention of raping her near the new terminal of the Biju Patnaik domestic airport here Wednesday. One of the miscreants was also nabbed by them and handed over to the city Mahila police station.

According to sources, the victim who hails from Visakhapatnam had come to Bhubaneswar to visit her sister. She was trapped by an auto-rickshaw driver who managed to drug her and carry her to a desolate patch near the new airport terminal.

The lady, a mother of two, raised alarm when the auto-ricksaw driver and his friends tried to get physical with her.It is then that members of the city-based State Progressive Women Forum intervened.

“Our activists who were present near the place spotted some youths with near an isolated house with the victim and reached the spot suspecting foul play. They rescued her in an unconscious state and nabbed a youth. The police control room was informed and police took them to Airfield police station. Later the case was referred to Mahila Police station,” said State Progressive Women Forum president Mamta Samanatra.

“Based on the statement of the victim, we have lodged a case of molestation. Medical tests would be conducted on the woman and the detained youth would be interrogated on Thursday,” the Inspector-in-charge of Mahila Police station Sarojini Nayak told OST.
