Bhubaneswar, Oct 20:
Senior doctors at the Orthopaedic department of Apollo Hospital here today said new techniques and technology, now available in Odisha, can help patients of Osteoarthritis and Osteoporosis lead a normal life through surgery.
Taking part in a workshop to mark the World Osteoporosis Day, the doctors pointed out that over a hundred new patients in the state are seeking medical help every month for treatment of the two serious bone issues that could be crippling.
Deliberating on the subject ‘Post Replacement Education Session on Total Knee Replacement (TKR) and Total Hip Replacement (THR)’, the doctors threw light on the myths associated with TKR and THR and emphasised the need to create awareness among people on Osteoporosis.
Experts said these are medical conditions associated with old age that can disable a person and render him bed ridden.
Osteoarthritis at an old age results in gross joint surface damage which leads to pain and disability while Osteoporosis is caused due to loss of bone tissue that leaves bones less dense and more vulnerable to fracture. The latter results in a loss of height, severe back pain and change in one’s posture, they said.
Dr Sanjeev Patnaik, senior Orthopaedic consultant said with the latest techniques and technology available at the Apollo hospital, Bhubaneswar has conducted 450 successful joint replacement (TKR and THR) surgeries with a 99 per cent success rate.
People in the age group of 45 to 60 years feel they are not old enough to undergo joint replacement, even if they have severe knee pain or gross deformity. Howver, adequate surgical techniques and best implants, which are now locally available, can help knees to last almost 20 years even in older patients, helping them to lead a near normal life. There are about 10-12 specialised centres, excluding Apollo hospital, that carry out joint replacement in the state, said Dr Patnaik.
Though the cost associated with TKR/THR is very high and not affordable for many, 50 percent discount on the actual price has been made on whole body bone densitometry examination in Apollo hospital for today for invited patients. The actual price for the test is Rs 1900, the doctors said.
Moreover from October 28 to November 19, the hospital is also offering 50 per cent discount on the actual cost of knee joint and hip check. The going price forconducting such tests is Rs 1600, they added.
