Paradip, Sep 24:
In a new turn of events, six rival stevedoring organisations, led by Seaways Shipping, formed a new association named Utkal Stevedores Association in Odisha’s Paradip Port yesterday.
Apart from Seaways Shipping and Logistics Private Limited (SSL), the other members in the association are Odisha Motors Ltd, B Ghose & Co, NK Stevedores, Chennai Radha Engineering Ltd and Sahoo & Brothers Engineering Pvt Ltd. Three more agencies have expressed interest in becoming members of the association.
As per sources, SSL had applied for registration of the new association under the Societies Registration Act, 1860 on August 10 and received the registration certificate on Tuesday.
While Managing Director of Odisha Motors Ltd Prana Krushna Nayak has been chosen as the president of the new association, NK Stevedores’ Nirmal Swain and Sahoo & Brothers’ Sriram Sahoo has been nominated as its Vice President. SSL Deputy General Manager Mahendra Swain has been elected as the Secretary.
“The new association has been formed in the wake of a rise in cargo operations in the port. It wouldn’t have any implication on the other stevedoring association named ‘Paradip Stevedores Association’ that has 29 members,” said the new President Prana Krushna Nayak speaking to media.
Experts, however, see the new association as a challenge to the monopoly by Paradip Stevedores over cargo handling and predict the row over cargo handling at the port to continue.
