The inaugural session of the 15th Odisha Vidhan Sabha began today with the Governor DR SC Jamir presenting a speech highlighting the priorities and important goals that the new state government has set for itself. The Governor’s speech made references to the pre-poll promises made by the ruling Biju Janata Dal on agricultural growth both in terms of production and infrastructure such as irrigation measures, converting kuccha homes into pucca houses, women empowerment, development in health infrastructure, roads and communication, anti-poverty schemes and generation of employment.
The House adjourned for the day after paying homage to former legislators and police and security personnel who died or were killed in the line of duty in the recent past.
The new House has 117 BJD members while the two principal opposition parties, Congress and the BJP have 16 and 10 members respectively. The leader of the Congress Legislature Party (CLP) Narasingh Mishra is the new Leader of Opposition in the House.
KV Singhdeo, who headed the BJP Legislature Party (BJPLP) in the last assembly, will be leading the BJPLP until a new leader is formally elected.
