New Delhi/ Bhubaneswar, Jan 23:
A team of the National Commission for Women (NCW) will visit Odisha soon to conduct an inquiry into the incident of alleged rape of a woman by Biju Janata Dal MLA from Udala in Mayurbhanj district Srinath Soren and his associates, NCW chairperson Mamta Sharma told reporters in New Delhi on Thursday.
The incident which reportedly took place on January 3 in the block headquarters town of Udala came to light only after police registered a complaint against the legislator and one of his associates Monday evening.
The woman, a 38 year old, has alleged that Srinath Soren, who represents Udala constituency in the state assembly, had taken around Rs.1 lakh from her promising a job some months ago.
But as the legislator failed to keep his promise, the woman demanded her money back.
After repeated requests to refund her the money, the legislator called her to his residence at Udala on January 3. But instead of returning the money, the legislator and one of his associates confined her in a room and allegedly raped her.
The woman claimed she managed to escape when an unidentified person knocked on the door.
The woman said, soon after the incident she went to a police station but police refused to register her complaint.
Police registered a case against the legislator and his associate Swarup Das only after the woman moved the local court seeking justice.
Soren has however said that the allegation is false and the handiwork of his opponents who have been using the woman to tarnish his image ahead of the 2014 polls.
