Bhubaneswar, Nov 16:
In the wake of BJD Mahila wing president Pramila Mallick’s statement on farmer suicides, Odisha Chief Minister and party supremo Naveen Patnaik today sent a word of caution to his party colleagues to refrain from making ‘irresponsible’ statements in the media on a sensitive issue like farmer suicides in the state.
Mallick in her reaction however, feigned ignorance of the developments and stated that she hasn’t received any communication either from the Chief Minister nor his office in this regard.
The former minister has stirred the hornet nest by asking the opposition to provide ‘amar laddoos’ (sweets that can bring immortality) to farmers to prevent farmer suicides in the state. She also took an indirect jibe at the media for reporting farmer suicides in the state.
“Whosoever dies in the state, the media reports it as a case of farmer suicide,” Mallick had told reporters yesterday.
The women’s wing of the Congress today burnt the effigy of the former minister today here while condemning her statement.
Similarly, former BJP minister Surama Padhi while condemning Mallick for her statement termed it as ‘adding insult to injury’.
Padhi urged the BJD government to start ‘amar laddoos scheme’ to prevent farmer suicides in the state.
