All 22 passengers of a country boat had a narrow escape today as they were rescued by fire brigade personnel after the boat in which they were travelling capsized in the middle of the river Rushikulya in Dharakote block of Odisha’s Ganjam district, said official sources.
Seven girl students of college, who were seriously injured in the accident, have been hospitalized. While six of them have been admitted to the government hospital at Aska, one of them -identified as Banita Behera – has been shifted to MKCG Medical College and Hospital at Brahmapur.
The incident occurred around noon today when a boat carrying 22 persons, including college students, teachers and children, capsized midway in the swollen Rushikulya river after losing its balance, the sources said. The boat was travelling from Bhalliapalli village under Dharakote block to Mundmarai, the sources added.
The girl students were on their way to attend Somnath Science College at Mundamarai.
Police has detained the boatman for interrogation, official sources said.
People of 25 villages under Dharakote block use boats to cross the river Rushikulya for their daily needs during floods.
Dharakote tehsildar Ramesh Jena, police and fire brigade personnel had immediately rushed to the spot for rescue operations.
