Phulbani, Jun 23:
Justice AS Naidu, who heads the one-man Commission of Inquiry probing the 2008 Kandhamal riots in Odisha, today said that the deposition of witnesses in the case would be over by next Friday and the Commission would submit its report within the next 2-3 months.
“The deposition of witnesses is in the final stages. I hope we will be able to wrap it up by Friday. A lot depends upon the time taken for arguments by the advocates. We will start working on the report as soon as these processes are over. I guess we will be able to submit the report within next 2-3 months,” said Justice Naidu today.
The Naidu Commission has so far recorded statements of 75 government servants and 213 other witnesses.
Deposing in front of the commission today, the-then DG of Police Gopal Nanda said that Maoists had killed Hindu saint Swamy Laxmanananda Saraswati even though adequate security had been provided.
“As per the reports of our investigation, Maoists were involved in the murder of Swamy Laxmanananda Saraswati. The district administration had arranged for the security of Swamiji based on the security assessment at the times. However, the unfortunate incident still took place,” said former DGP Nanda.
It may be noted that backward Kandhamal district witnessed large-scale Hindu-Christian riots in 2008. At least 38 people, a majority of them Christians, were killed and thousands had to flee their homes from both communities in the riots that had started following the murder of Hindu saint Laxmanananda Saraswati.
