Dhenkanal, June 16:
A naib-sarpanch was killed and three others critically injured today as rival groups clashed over the use of a village field in Odisha’s Dhenkanal district, police said.
Reports said, the clash erupted after people belonging to the local Juang Sahi insisted on using a village field as a playground, while other villagers wanted it to be converted into a grazing field for cattle.
Gun-wielding rival groups turned Bimbol, a village under Dhenkanal Sadar police limits into a bloody battle field, killing Sadananda Pradhan (52), a naib-sarpanch of Madhussahupatna gram panchayat and several others, said sub-divisional police officer (SDPO), Rajkishore Dora said.
Pradhan, who runs a PDS shop in Juang Sahi allegedly, contested the opinion of a one particular group, thus inviting their wrath, reports said.
The three seriously injured persons, who were first treated at the district hospital here, had to be shifted to the SCB Medical College Hospital at Cuttack after their condition deteriorated, Dora said.
In view of the tension that prevails in the area, a section of the armed police has been deployed in the village, he said.
