Bhubaneswar: Odisha Tourism today uploaded a video giving us a glimpse of Mayurbhanj’s Sami Bruksha/Shami Briksha. Around 500ft high, Sami Bruksha is a hillock, a tall standing rock unlike what the name suggests.

The hillock looks bright and beautiful in the sunlight. On the western side of the rock, are five caves. It is said that the five Pandavas of the epic Mahabharata, hid their arms in these caves before proceeding to the court of the king Vrata.

Legends also has it that the Pandav brothers hid with Draupadi below a tree. That tree turned into a stone in Kaliyuga.  This single stone formed the hill, Sami Brukshya.

A fair is held at Sami Brukhya in January (Makar Sankranti) every year.

The magnificent hillock is a challenge for rock climbers.

The 43-second video beautifully captures Sami Bruksha and has already garnered 2K views. People’s response to the video has also been positive.

The video is an attempt by the Odisha Tourism to woo people to the tribal-dominated district rich with flora and fauna. Plans are also afoot to organize water sports like boating, windsurfing, snorkelling, scuba diving and kayaking in Kalo dam, which is around 4 km from Sami Bruksha.

Cage fish farming and Island tourism will also be initiated to promote ecotourism in the region.

The water sports activities will also be conducted in two other water reservoirs of Mayurbhanj- Jambhira and Sunei. This was decided by the state government after a preliminary survey conducted in September last year, by Kalinga Drivers’ Foundation Trust and district officials.

Local people will be trained and engaged in this project to boost their income. Facilities like safe drinking water, rest sheds, restaurant and park will also be developed.
