Khordha, Apr 12:
The presence of a murder accused on the dais during chief minister Naveen Patnaik’s election meeting in Tangi in Odisha’s Khordha district has raised questions about the party’s links with criminal elements and police inaction.
According to reports, police had arrested three accused in connection with the murder of Prasanna Nayak who was killed in a bomb attack at Taladola Dihapur village on March 22 this year, following a dispute over the possession of a cashew orchard. The arrests were made after a complaint was lodged by the deceased’s widow Pramila.
In her complaint, the widow had mentioned the name of 15 persons including the prime accused Prakash Samantray, husband of BJD member of the Khordha Zilla Parishad zone no-2 Swarnalata Samantray.
She had also alleged that the police was trying to hush up the matter because of Samantray’s links with the ruling party.
While the police had failed to arrest Prakash all these days, the latter was seen with chief minister Naveen Patnaik and the party candidate from Khordha Rajendra Sahu on the podium during the public meeting at Tangi on Friday.
Surprisingly, the police, who had earlier said that the prime accused Samantray is an absconder, did not make any attempt to arrest him from the meeting place.
When contacted, IIC of Sadar police station said the police are investigating into the incident after registering a case under section 302 of the IPC and trying to nab the prime accused.
He, however, said that he had no information about the presence of Samantray at BJD’s election meeting at Tangi.
