Bhubaneswar, Sep 16:
Media Unity for Freedom of Press (MUFP), a journalists’ body fighting for the rights of media persons in Odisha, has demanded an unconditional apology from Revenue minister Bijayshree Routray for his intemperate behaviour with members of a few television crews at his office yesterday.
Expressing deep shock and surprise over the incident, MUFP has strongly condemned the assault on media persons doing their duty by the cabinet minister. “The Minister, Mr. Bijayshree Routray, seems to have forgotten all ethics and manners while dealing with press persons,” a statement released by senior journalist Prasanta Patnaik on behalf of MUFP said today.
“Media persons in Odisha have been the target of wrongdoers for quite some time. Not even a month has passed since media persons were attacked and seriously injured by hired goons inside KISS and KIIT campus. The police have not taken any action against the assaulters despite demand by the MUFP,” the statement said.
At the same time, MUFP also called for serious introspection within the media fraternity to find out the reasons for the growing attacks on media persons.
“The MUFP also appeals to the Chief Minister to take all such issues seriously and initiate appropriate action against the attackers, including minister Mr Routray, so that freedom of expression in the state is duly protected,” the statement said.
MUFP will organise a protest rally on the issue near the Freedom Tree in front of Jayadev Bhavan here at 5 pm today, Patnaik said.
