Bhubaneswar, Dec 2:
The mother of a 19 year old dalit girl who was allegedly gang-raped and murdered on November 7 has leveled serious allegations against the Ramchandi ( Konark) police accusing them of shielding the real culprit and arresting her son-in-law instead.
The matter came to light after the deceased’s mother brought the matter to the notice of the StateHuman Rights Commission on Novemebr 29. She tried her best to meet with the chief minister to seek justice but that never happened.
Speaking to OST on Sunday night, Kamala Kandi (55), a resident of Naugoan Bali Sahi in Jagatsinghpur district said since she is very poor she had sent her daughter Mami with her mason son-in-law in March this year to work in a farm in Ramachandi near Konark, owned by Bhabanishankar Rath.
“I was shattered when the Naugaon police informed me that Mami’s body had been recovered near Begunia Chhak along the Pipili- Konark road and asked me to rush to Ranmchandi, ” she said
“When I reached Ramchandi, the local police asked me to sign an FIR prepared by them earlier. They told me Mami had committed suicide by consuming poison, ” Kamala said.
” But we found marks of injury all over her body, clear signs that she was murdered ,” said Kamala, adding that the Ramachandi police without conducting any kind of inquiry implicated her son-in-law Subas Kandi in the case and later arrested him.
” We have knocked the doors of the State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) and the Chief Minister on November 29 to apprise them of the deliberate inaction of local Ramachandi police who are trying to hush up the case in order to protect the real culprits because they are influential people,” she said.
She alleged that the farm house owner Bhabani Shankar Rath and his associate Dhadia Khuntia killed her daughter after raping her, adding , the two got Mami’s body cremated without even seeking her permission.
” I had lodged a complaint on November 8 naming the culprits but the police chose to ignore it because one of the culprits is the brother of a former DGP of a neighbouring state ,” Kamala said.
Kamala Tandi said she will not give up until she secures justice for Mami.
