Minor girl drowns in village pond

Brahmapur, Aug 27

A Class IX girl student drowned in a village pond at Dhenkishala village under Sheragada police station limit, about 45 kilometre from here on Tuesday.

The body of Pinki Dakua (14), a student of Panchayat High School, Dhinkishala, was fished out by some youths who were present near the pond, said police.

She drowned while trying to go to the other side to reach her grandmother’s house at Padmapur, they said.

She had attended the prayer class and then left the school without intimating the class teacher. However, she had told her friends about going to her grandmother’s house.

“The death was caused due to drowning and the body has no injury marks”, said inspector-in charge, Sheragada, P K Sahu.

Meanwhile, angry over the incident, villagers blocked the road at Dhenkishala holding the school authorities responsible for her death. Why did the school authorities allow her to go outside soon after the prayer session, they asked. The head master of the school, however, refused to comment.

The situation was under control and the body has been sent for post mortem. (PTI)
