Migrant labourer from Odisha alleges kidney theft

Odisha Sun Times Bureau
Malkangiri, Mar 27:

In yet another shocking case of exploitation of migrant workers from Odisha in neighbouring states, one of the kidneys of a youth from Malkangiri has been deceptively removed from his body while his sibling is missing since over a year.

The victim siblings are Irma Madkami and Kasa Madkami of Titing village in Malkangiri district.

Both Irma and Kasa were working in Andhra Pradesh in Vijayawada with a firm engaged in digging of bore wells, local sources said.

Local sources said in April 2014 while working in the firm Irma met with an accident and was hospitalized in Vijayawada. In the mishap, he sustained grievous injuries in his excretory system for which bypass surgery was conducted. After undergoing treatment for a few days at the hospital he was sent back home by his employer who had given him Rs 10,000 at the time of departure.

“There was no improvement in Irma’s health after he returned home. As his condition deteriorated we took him to the hospital at Vijayawada where he had undergone treatment after his accident. Doctors there advised for another surgery. As we didn’t have the money we returned home. We took him to a local doctor. After conducting the necessary examination, the doctor found that my son didn’t have one of his kidneys,” said Samuru, father of Irma talking to reporters.

“My younger son, who had also gone to Vijayawada to work as a migrant labourer, is missing since over a year. We have no idea about his whereabouts for over a year. I had complained to the local authorities but to no avail,” Samaru added.

Earlier on Wednesday, a migrant worker of the district breathed his last after being dumped by his employers under a tree while seriously ill and left unattended for more than 12 hours as we reported here.
