Bhubaneswar, Oct 4:
The editor of Odisha’s No 1 newspaper ‘Sambad’ Soumya Ranjan Patnaik today called upon the media to play a leadership role in the larger interest of the society.
The chairman of state’s largest media conglomerate Eastern Media Limited (EML) and editor of the daily was speaking on the sidelines of the 32nd anniversary of its daily.
“Media should come forward to take a leadership role in the society to help the oppressed and teach a lesson to egotistical politicians. It should act as such a system to address the issues,” Soumya Ranjan Patnaik said.
“This day is a memorable and remarkable day for Sambad Parivar. Sambad and Kanak News were born on this date. Today, Sambad has become a No 1 newspaper and Kanak News has been able to make its mark as a popular channel,” he added.
Notably, the now-undisputed No 1 daily was launched on October 4, 1984. The newspaper now has eight editions across the state with around 70 lakh readership. It was the first media house to launch morning edition, colour prints and multi-edition, to become a torchbearer in the print media industry.
“We have always strived to set higher benchmarks despite being No 1 in the industry. We would try to better the circulation, advertising revenue as well as content for our readers,” Managing Director of EML, Monica Nayyar Patnaik said.
During its eventful, 32-year long journey, the daily has not only been the trendsetter in introducing new printing technology in the industry, but has also chronicled some of the most significant developments in the areas of politics, society and culture in the state.
‘Sambad’ celebrated the completion of its 32 years with several competitions in singing, debate and painting among others.
Coincidentally, Kanak News, the regional television channel from the same Eastern Media Limited (EML) stable also completed seven years of its existence today.
