Bhubaneswar, Mar 11:
Former Odisha DGP Sanjeev Marik today recorded his initial statement at the Sub Divisional Judicial Magistrate (SDJM)’s Court here in the criminal defamation suit filed by him against former MP Anadi Sahu.
The former top cop claimed that Sahu had made baseless allegations against him for cheap publicity which has caused mental sufferings and damaged his social esteem.
“Since the matter is sub judice we cannot discuss its facts in the public. The only thing I can say at this moment is that whatever press statement Anadi babu had made on February 20 on the basis of which reports were published in the media, those being baseless has damaged my reputation, in accordance with the provisions of the law I had filed a defamation suit. As the complainant in the case I recorded my statement today,” said Marik talking to reporters after recording his statement at the SDJM Court here.
“My client recorded his initial statement on the basis of what he had filed the complaint case. He told the court that allegations made by Anadi Sahu against him had no basis and how it had affected his reputation and the reputation of his family members. In his statement he told the court that allegations made by Anadi Sahu that he had given protection to criminals or he was shunted out from the DGP’s post for transferring some police officers, that he had a bank account in which he had received Rs 2.5 crore were untrue. He said he has only one bank account with the SBI and no other bank account; he has neither given protection to any criminal nor has received any amount from anybody. He further told the court that he has never gone beyond the purview of his duty,” said Chinmaya Mohanty, Marik’s counsel to reporters.
“We are submitting copies of ‘The Samaj’, ‘Sambad’, ‘Times of India’ and ‘The New Indian Express’ of February 21, 2016 in which Anadi Sahu’s statement was published to the court today,” Mohanty added.
On March 1, Marik had filed a criminal defamation suit against Sahu in Sub Divisional Judicial Magistrate (SDJM) Court here for Rs 50 lakh under IPC section – 500, 501 and 502.
Later Marik had filed a civil defamation suit for Rs 50 lakh against former MP Sahu in the Civil Court (Senior Division) Bhubaneswar on March 4. The court on March 7 served summons Sahu to appear before it in person or through his attorney on April 5 in connection with the civil defamation suit filed by former state DGP Sanjeev Marik against him
Notably, former Cuttack MP and Ex- IG Sahu on February 20 had alleged that Marik has close links with the gangster Dhalasamanta brothers (D-brothers).
Later on February 23, he further alleged Marik to have pocketed seven crores from arrested brothers. He had also said that Marik’s now transferred stenographer Rabindra Sethi used to take care of his illegal transactions and invest them in various places.
Marik, on the other hand, had demanded evidence of his claim and had threatened to drag the matter to the court as we reported here.
