Muniguda ( Rayagada), Dec 21:
Maoists set on fire two tractors and a Hitachi excavator used for road construction near Panimunda late on Friday night, local reports said.
According to local people, a group of 20 armed Maoists including two women arrived at Pajibali village of Muniguda block in the late night hours where the local contractor Parsuram Sahu had set up a camp for construction of a PMGSY road and set the vehicles and equipment on fire.
The proposed PMGSY road would connect Panimunda with Burti-Khamar, a village close to the Niyamgiri hill.
The Maoists, local sources said, had warned the contractor not to build the road because it would only facilitate movement of vehicles carrying raw materials to Vedanta Alumina’s refinery at Lanjigarh.
The posters left behind by the Maoists say no road work should be carried out by use of machines and that local people should be employed to do the job. The posters also mention that the minimum daily wage for such work should be Rs 200 a day.
Following information, police and the CRPF personnel have rushed to the spot and started a combing operation, sources said.
