Phulbani: Unleashing havoc in Odisha’s Kandhamal district, Maoists allegedly murdered a watchman at a contractor’s camp in Mallikapada under Sadar police limits and set five vehicles on fire late last night.
The red rebels reportedly barged into the camp around 2 AM and shot watchman Rabindra Mallick dead. The extremists later torched a roller, a mini truck and three tractors and fled the spot. The vehicles were engaged in road construction in the area under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana.
Sources said, Maoists had last year asked Prasanna Kumar Swain, the concerned contractor, to give them Rs 5 lakh. Swain had told the Maoists to receive the amount from him at a particular place and informed the police about it earlier.
As many as five Maoists were killed in an encounter with police at that place, last year. To seek revenge, Maoists launched attack on the camp last night, sources added.
