Malkangiri, Dec 28:
Maoists have blown up a part of the approach road to a bridge over river Saberi in Padia late on Friday night.
The Kanyashram bridge as it is known locally, is on the main road which connects Padia with the rest of the district.
Maoists used dynamites for the blast, reports said.
Local villagers said there was an explosion late on Friday night but they were too scared to come out of their homes.
“We thought Maoists had blown up the school building,” a villager said.
However, IANS quotes the Malkangiri SP Akhileshwar Singh as saying, the approach road to the bridge had been dug up,
to prevent movement of security forces.
Singh told IANS, about 40 armed rebels reached near the bridge between Padia and Kalimela around 3 a.m. and dug up the road using spades and iron rods.
“They created a five-foot-long pit on the road. Steps are being taken to repair it. They, however, caused no harm to the bridge,” he told IANS.
Earlier this week, the rebels had blown up a block office building in Padia village.
The ultras have left behind posters announcing an indefinite bandh in the Koraput-Malkangiri area beginning today to protest operations by the security forces in the district.
